What golf club set should I get?

I’m here to help! I’ve done the research and ranked various women’s golf club sets from different manufacturers based of the types of questions and priorities my students look for.

Read below to see when is the right time to buy clubs and to understand more about the process so you’ll know what’s right for you!

WHEN?

When is the right time to buy a starter set?

Which describes you?

  1. I have never picked up a golf club
  2. I have hit and few golf balls at a golf range/course
  3. I have played a few rounds of golf

You DO NOT and should not have to buy golf clubs to start the process of getting into golf!!

If you answered A, it is definitely not the time to buy golf clubs! A good golf professional will not push you into buying golf clubs until you are ready! If you answered B, I highly recommend signing up for some beginner clinics and then it would be a great time to get a golf club set! Prior to being ready, here are a few things you can do prior to buying a golf club set.

  • Call a public range to see if you can borrow golf clubs to hit at the range. (Almost all ranges have clubs for you to borrow)
  • When you take clinics/lessons check that golf clubs will be provided (they definitely should be!)
  • Golf courses have rental clubs you can borrow if you are going to play golf.

If you answered C, you’ve been probably borrowing friends clubs out golfing or used rental sets out golfing. Since you’ve been out on the golf course a few times, you’ll have a better idea of how much of an interest you have in the game and that’s a perfect time to get a starter set!

The next level up sets can range in price, but are much higher in price and do not come as a set typically besides the ones rated highest on my longevity list. Irons come together but all of the other clubs you order separately like I showed in the example below. Starting off with the starter sets make it easier to have consistency throughout your set. Then depending upon how much you want to play and how your game changes over time, your starter set can last a long time or you might need a new set. I highly recommend working with a PGA/LPGA Professional as they can help you attain your goals with lessons and/or clinics! They also work with you to determine the best time to move on to another set after your starter set if that is even needed.

WHY?

Why do I recommend starting off with a starter set that comes with most or all the golf club types?

It’s simple! A set is consistent and its price point is always better than getting the clubs seperately! A golf club set can consist of up to 14 clubs, which can include a putter, irons, hybrids, and woods including a driver. If you don’t get an already made set, you would be making a bunch of orders like the following below and you would have to determine which clubs would be correct (length, loft, shaft type, etc.) to make them go different distances, heights, etc. You don’t have to determine any of that if you get a set!! The companies did all that work already for you!

For example, here are 12 clubs from the company TaylorMade that you would have to make five separate orders to make up the set:

Spider Tour Putter – $349.99

Qi10 Max Driver – $599.99

Qi10 Max 3,5,7 Fairway Woods – $1,049.97

Kalea Premier Women’s Combo Set 5-6 Hybrids, 7-9 Irons, PW, SW – $999.99

Cart Lite Golf Bag $299.99

Total = $3,299.93

Instead, you can put one order through for the Kalea Premier 11-Piece Set and it’ll come with the following:

Driver, 5 Wood, 5 Hybrid, 6 Hybrid, 7-9 Iron, PW, SW, Putter, Headcovers, and a Stand Bag – $1,699.99

Why don’t I recommend getting the cheapest box set you see online or at the store?

LONGEVITY, CONSISTENCY, and COST.

LONGEVITY – Golf clubs are not manufactured the same with every company. The materials used and how the shape of the club heads are composed, varies not just by manufacturer but by line. Those that are the cheapest have designed their clubs with cheaper materials to be able to provide the low cost of items. They may look nice on the outside, but as the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover.

CONSISTENCY – With great quality club manufacturers, they have large R&D (Research and Development) departments and quality control measures that test all potential designs for not only the best result, but for consistency on their products with a lot of their resources put into that department. For example, they do strength tests and try different materials to find the most beneficial, not just lowest in cost. They not only do internal testing on their products but also send off their equipment to be tested at the New Jersey office of the USGA (United States Golf Association) to be within legal limits according to the rules of golf with their clubs and balls lines.

COST – With the cheapest and not well-made sets, they break sooner and thus you will need to buy more clubs sooner so it is not always cost savvy to buy the cheapest set you see! Also, most of those cheap sets do not have the option of just buying one club from them to be able to add that back into your set. You would have to add a golf club in from another set and it would not match your set, thus making your set inconsistent and changing yardages between clubs. It could also change setup perhaps with different lengths, lofts, lies as well as a different grip with having that one club not matching, which makes a big difference not only to the shot but to how you feel when you hold the club and set up to the ball.

Why not get clubs from a yard sale?

PLEASE DON’T! OUCH! I’ve been to so many yard sales scoping out golf clubs and almost all of them are blade steel golf clubs that will often hurt hitting. Not only that, the ball will go super low, the clubs will be too heavy and will have no real forgiveness for mishits. We don’t want any of that! Even if it’s a few bucks, it’s definitely not work it!

Why not get cheap hand me down clubs cut down?

Again, with the clubs being often steel blades, that’s no good! Let’s now say that they are graphite and it sa! It will say it often on the shaft. That’s better but not good enough! Graphite is hard to cut down without splintering and depending upon where they are cut down, that could actually make the clubs even stiffer!! That will make the ball go much lower, which we really don’t want. I have too many students come to me with cut down clubs gone wrong that makes it more difficult and less fun entering the game.

Why did I make this area on my website and provide a way to order clubs on here? (Yup, there’s a way to do that here!)

I started my business in 2023 traveling to golf courses in MA, running my women’s golf player development programming. My most popular program is called ‘No Embarrassment Clinics’ and is catered to beginner and returning to the game golfers. Check them out! 😊Many women sign up for these not owning golf clubs and not sure if they need to buy them for the classes. I tell them there is no need to buy clubs for our 5-week series as I provide golf clubs for them each week. By the end they have a better idea of how much they’d like to get into golf and the rating factors (shown above) are determining factors to getting a set. I looked online trying to find a non-biased women’s golf club set rating system or websites that weren’t just cut and paste trying to sell the products to send over to them. I couldn’t find what I was looking for and what I believe is really needed in the industry. That’s when I decided to make one to help my students and any women out there determine what set is best for them starting out in golf with a rating system for various lines of products from different companies!

I also know that going into a golf store to buy golf clubs can be intimidating (I’ve heard and have had bad experiences) and the process of ordering something in person or online is a pretty big purchase! It’s a big stepping stone in golf! It really is! You want to know that it’s a good product for you, to be sure, right?! So, I talked to my good friend, a fellow golf pro I teach with often who is the Head Golf Pro at Shining Rock Golf Club, Mike Stacy, about this and we’ve teamed up to offer a special experience!

Mike is able to process golf club set orders through his golf shop at Shining Rock Golf Club and has offered to have interactions with every single person ordering!! That is what you get at some high-end private country clubs!! That way after you place an order, within 2 days he’ll reach out to you, verify the order, and make sure it’s right for you! No matter where in the US you live! That’s the kind of experience him and I talked about that we believe every woman should have.

The info on this page, the ranking system and the ordering I want it to be accessible for all women across America (*fyi the orders get drop shipped to your house*), so please share with anyone you think it will help! If you don’t order through us, please let me know if you found this information helpful below. 😊That would mean a lot!

Please note: These rankings are my own recommendations and no one else’s. They are not a promise that a certain set will make you ball go for example higher and further. I put the rating system together to be as helpful as possible to find the best fit for each person depending upon their personal wants.

HOW?

Instead of going into a golf shop to buy a set, ordering through a company website or through the insane amount of other places you can buy clubs from like Facebook marketplace and Ebay that aren’t always legit, I work with the local golf pro I mentioned above to make the ordering process simple and personalized for each person.

I’ve made a simple order form for you to fill out. CLICK HERE to view the Golf Club Set Order Form.

Once you have completed this order form, you will receive a call from Mike Stacy, Head Golf Professional at Shining Rock Golf within 2 days to confirm details of your order. That way you know you’ll get what you ordered and ask any questions you have to an incredibly knowledgeable and kind golf professional!

All orders will be drop shipped right to your door!

Quick, simple and personalized!

WHAT’S NEXT?

ADD A STEEL SHAFT SW – You don’t need to be an intermediate golfer to get to this step. You can do this now or at any time! Ask Mike when you order your set if this is right for you now.

TAYLORMADE KALEA SETS – These are not only great for beginner golfers but will continue to grow with you as you improve and be beneficial to you as an intermediate golfer! As long as you continue to keep a consistent swing speed (if you increase your speed a lot then you will need stiffer shafts) this set can be with you for a LONG TIME!! Check out the others on the longevity rating to see sets that can last with you longer than just as starter set and can stay with you for many years!

The name of the club is a Sand Wedge, but it is a club that you don’t just use out of the sand, you can use it for all types of golf shots around the green. You will see steel SW golf clubs available for purchase in almost every golf shop you go into.

Almost all women’s club sets have a SW that keeps consistent with the set with the same light graphite women’s shaft. So, check out what your shaft is. Is it like your Putter (steel and heavier) or your Irons (graphite and lighter)? I recommend buying a separate SW that is 56 and/or 60 degrees (the higher the degree, the higher the ball will go) with a STEEL shaft, like your putter! You don’t want the bendiness when you are hitting golf shots around the green. Think about when you are putting, you don’t want the shaft to bend as the shot will be less consistent. The same thing when you are hitting short shots around the green! You can add that club in any time and it is ok if it is another brand

GET FIT – I recommend after your starter set to talk with a golf pro and see about getting fit for golf clubs.

Mike Stacy at Shining Rock Golf Club offers free golf club fittings! If you don’t live close by, are in another part of the state or in another state across the US, I recommend going to a place that doesn’t charge hundreds of dollars for a club fitting. Especially when you are progressing early in your golfing life, up-charges with custom shafts that are crazy expensive and will not make a huge difference at your level should never occur. Please do not ever feel pressured to buy!

Most golf pros will give free fittings if you buy the clubs from them! Sweet, right?! Definitely check that out before scheduling. That’s what I used to do when I used to give 2-3 golf club fittings every day. At that facility I had over five company fitting sets to choose from. Once I narrowed down let’s say for fitting irons, the best type of shaft and type of head for the client (most of those companies had very comparable options and many shaft options were exactly the same), I would narrow down the options depending upon their price and provide them with the type of matchups from different companies that fit the best with their stats. I would compare the all on a flight monitor, and once narrowed down actually show them the difference from their clubs visually and explain the process and it would be down to price and look at the end because the stats were typically identical. Just like I used to do, a club fitter should share with you different brand options and provide you details analysis about how they would fit best for you in understandable terms. If you don’t understand what they are trying to say, it’s their responsibility to explain it in a clearer way. Please don’t feel pressured to get something they can’t explain, it’s the golf pro’s responsibility to help you understand! (Note: If you have to ask questions over and over and over and the pro is getting frustrated with you, it’s not your fault! IT’S THEIRS! You should feel heard and should understand the whole process!) When you set up your fitting appointment, I recommend checking how many types of company fitting sets they have. Most golf courses only have 1-2, and indoor places typically have a lot more. The more options the better and checking that they will utilize multiple options in the fitting I believe is important as well!

Another option is demo days. That’s an option if you like a certain brand, like your starter set for an example. You can go and try any club from the company out for free and you don’t have to sign up! The heads of the clubs are interchangeable so you can try any time of combination. You can find out when they are by calling a course to ask or look on the courses website or get on their email list. For demo days there will also be an option to get fit during the demo day hours with that company with no requirement to buy. I’ve ran tons of different company demo days at the courses I’m been at and they are a super fun experience! No pressure and you can try out all the new equipment!

So happy you got this far and I hope you got a lot out of this! I know it was a bit of reading 🙂
